Identification of Diamonds

Identification of diamonds has always been a difficult task but with the development of many new techniques of production synthetic precious stones diamond identification is even more strenuous. So before buying an engagement ring learn about diamonds.

Synthetic diamonds produced these days possess mechanical and optical properties identical to natural diamonds. That means that identification of synthetic diamonds is barely possible, which is very problematic for jewelers and experts. That will certainly pose threat and cause chaos in jewelry trade market. The technological development in monocrystal diamonds breeding is extremely fast. Therefore, for accurate diamond identification it is essential to know all production methods including high pressure or high temperature techniques in which diamonds are formed from gases.

Synthetic diamonds can be identified by microscope and loop. One of the methods of producing diamonds is called BARS, the gems created with the use of this method are of better quality than e.g. HPHT and their identification is almost impossible. Although many jewellery companies want to combat unfair competition reality brings totally different situation. Synthetic diamonds, simulators and diamond enhancements flow into the jewellery markets which makes this gem less unique and cheap.

If you have always wanted to possess diamonds you probably know that diamond is the hardest substance found in nature, it is even four times harder than the second hard gem. It can cleave though if it's hit into one of four directions of cleavage. Colors vary from pale yellows, browns, grays, white, greenish or black. Natural colored diamond costs much more than the irradiated one, the same rule applies to diamond clarity, the clearer, the more expensive it becomes. So before buying diamonds learn everything about their clarity, cut and colors.
