Ruby Gemstone

Ruby gemstone is the one that deserves your attention. It is a beautiful gem used for creating classy and high quality jewelry.

is a type of corundum which is colorless, however, additions of various minerals create its colour. Ruby has a dark red colour thank to the addition of trace amount of chromium. Its name derived from a Latin word "ruber" which means red. A little bit of iron makes the ruby brown in shade. The prices and value of rubies are mostly dependent on their colors with its three elements: hue, saturation and tone. After color, the clarity is checked with a clear stone like a diamond being the most expensive.

The form and shape of ruby stones depend on its type and deposit e.g rubies from Burma usually have the shape of a hexagonal pillar. It doesn't have a distinct cleavage but it may be divided when its part has got lower cohesion. You can notice a red luminescence of a ruby through those 'crossed filters'.

Rubies of the highest quality come from the Magok Valley in Burma. According to written sources, rubies have been extracted since 1597 however they were surely found many years earlier. They can also come from river gravel. The color of the prettiest rubies from Burma is often described as 'rich pigeon blood red'. Even though Burmese rubies are beautiful, the biggest deposits are in Thailand. Thai rubies are darker and less attractive than those found in Burma. Rubies can also be found in Tanzania, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, India, Malawi or the USA.
